Mauersberg

Mauersberg was first mentioned in a document in 1291 as Ursberg. The village was initially owned by the Cistercian monastery of Buch near Leisnig before it was sold to the lords of Waldenburg auf Wolkenstein around 1300. From 1544, Mauersberg was owned by the mining town of Marienberg. Agriculture was the main activity in Mauersberg. The name "Quarkstadt" (curd town), which is used jokingly in the area, is connected with this. It goes back to the production of curd cheese, which was used well into modern times not only as a foodstuff but also as an admixture for building mortar and plaster and was also provided by the Mauersberg farmers for various building projects in the surrounding area. Among other things, curd from Mauersberg is also said to have been used in the construction of St. Anne's Church in Annaberg-Buchholz. Today, Mauersberg is a lively town with active clubs. The people of Mauersberg are always at the top of the sporting league. And to this day, special value is placed on the preservation of tradition. Woodcarving and handicrafts are practised here at a high level. Mauersberg is known for its regular carving and bobbin lace exhibitions. The folk get-togethers that are so typical of the Erzgebirge region, such as theatre or Hutzen evenings, also play an important role in Mauersberg. Concerts and exhibitions are held regularly in the village. The special status that music and art enjoy here has a long tradition. Mauersberg is the birthplace of the brothers Rudolf and Erhard Mauersberger, who were two of the most importantchurch musicians of the 20th century. Rudolf Mauersberger, in particular, has had a lasting influence on the local musical culture through his close connection to his hometown and has created an important sacral monument with the Kreuzkapelle (Chapel of the Cross), which he donated. As part of an exhibition on Rudolf and Erhard Mauersberger, the Mauersberger Museum is showing part of the Kreuzkantor's estate - including excerpts from the Kreuzkantor's private Erzgebirge collection - and is also actively engaged in cultural work with artistic-musical workshops and special events. Mauersberg is still a place of pilgrimage for people interested in music, and all Crucians come here at least once in the course of their membership in the Kreuzchor. The musical works that Rudolf Mauersberger prepared especially for the religious celebrations in his home town have established traditions in the village that live on to this day. His Christmas Mass and Easter Mass are regularly performed here for the corresponding festivals. During the Christmas season, the town becomes a destination for visitors from all over Germany who come to enjoy the splendour of the town's lights. There is hardly any other place in the Erzgebirge Christmas region where you will find the same extent of Christmas lighting. Visitors to the village can see every house lit up right down to the smallest window - a sight that makes the village seem like a huge Christmas mountain, not least thanks to its location in the relatively short side valley of the Preßnitz.
